Background: My name is Kas and I'm 24 years old. I moved to the UK in March, on a fiancee visa. My fiance and I had been together for about a year, him being a British citizen, and me, American.
Since moving here, my relationship has gone sour, and I know now that I cannot marry him. However, in order to move here, I had to sell everything that I owned. I literally have nothing in the US anymore. I have no family, no money, no job... I would be homeless.
Does anyone know the immigration laws well enough to tell me if its possible for me to *switch* visas? Like if I were to find a job willing to sponsor me for a work visa, since I cannot work on the fiancee visa?
I don't want to have to leave the UK if the fiancee visa runs out. I only have until 2 September, and I don't want to lock myself into a marriage that I know cannot work, just for the sake of staying in the UK.

Re: I'm Lost - Please Help Me
Wed, May 24, 2006 - 6:06 AMmy understanding is that to switch visas, you will have to leave the EU-
The fiane visa runs out in 90 days, and if you are not married during that 90 days you are supposed to go back to your home country and reapply either for a new fiance visa, or a different visa.
What I would advise is to first find out for sure if you have to leave the EU and re-enter on a new visa if you get a work sponsored one-
(Keep in mind most companies require you to pay for the work sponsored visa process, typically about $1500)
If you do NOT have to leave the EU, you're set-
if you DO have to leave, they will likely want a home country address to send the visa too.
You may have the option of having it sent to a country other than your home country-
I'm not sure, but it would be much easier to get to a non EU country on that side of the pond rather than back to the US.

Re: I'm Lost - Please Help Me
Wed, May 24, 2006 - 7:25 AMI thought of something else-
you are currently in the UK on a visa,
but if you leave the EU, and enter another country with a stamp-
THEN return to the EU as a traveler, not on your visa, you'll have 6 months there to try and find work.
But keep in mind that legally you are not allowed to look for work while you are there as a visitor-

Thu, May 25, 2006 - 9:07 AMAre you planning on moving to the UK permanently ? I do know that you are allowed to stay in the UK for a certain period of time without a visa (check with the American embassy ) the US has similar laws for UK citizens (its a visa waiver program)
worst case youd have to leave for a while to reapply and get a change. -
